Had a wonderful dining experience here with friends. Great food, drink, ambiance and our server, Diego was incredible friendly and knowledgeable. The small plates selection in particular were impressive, with many fun combinations of flavours and takes on Italian classics. The cooking of the pasta was perfect. Will definitely be back for Coffee and a pastry.

Lovely space open plan - can see the kitchen from where you are sat - was served by a wonderful person called Megan who (I think the manager?) was very knowledgable about the food & wine, took time to understand what we were looking for & recommended some lovely dishes. Impeccable service from her. Food was good - additional pasta dish on Thursday was tasty - Music was too loud & choice of music took away from the ambience sometimes. Quite a chilly space but Megan's welcome & warmth made up for it. Thank you Megan!

Nice to have something different in Saffron Walden. We've been on a number of occasions for dinner- it's a really interesting space, great service from friendly people and lovely food. We've also been for coffee & Eccles cake - excellent 👌. Recent glowing reviews are spot on. Looking forward to our next visit.
Been for lunch and happy to confirm it's just as good as dinner!! (oh and been for dinner a couple more times too). The people are still delightful

Another delightful visit to Chaters. The welcome, service and lovely food were very warm but it was a bit cool inside due to the freezing weather. Didn’t affect our enjoyment too much.

Not a fan of leaving negative reviews but disappointed enough with our experience to feel compelled to. Having received reminders to be on time and that we had to be done by 11pm (we had a 9pm seating for NY eve) we arrived at 8.55pm as requested. We were not alone and the restaurant was packed with people waiting to be seated. We said if we were not seated by 9.20pm we would leave. We eventually got seated at 9.25pm. To be fair we were offered a complementary drink but we were not sure what it was and none us of could drink it. When we were seated we were offered it again but politely declined. It was NY eve and we had a helpful waiter but the food was not good. It is of course highly personal but we all agreed on our table of 4 that a plate of nuts, the cut of cheese, the size you’d leave in a mouse trap as and some salami (as an entrée), was not the usual Chaters experience we have had. It was followed by ‘Bread and oil’ which turned out to be a brioche type bun filled with cold lavender cream. No one ate it. It wasn’t a pleasant taste or texture. We had pinned hopes on the venison, we didn’t know it was raw. Again a personal choice but we were starving and 2 small discs of cold meet with English mustard was not cutting it and most of the family don’t eat raw meat. The cod was good but a 5th cold course. We got the raviolo, our first warm meal and that was also well made. We had paid and opted for the cheese course but by 11.30pm patience warn thin, frustrated, hungry and wanting to get home, we asked for the bill missing the final courses. The waiter apologised and knocked off the wine. However we were still £293 worse off and honestly completely starving and disappointed. We’ve eaten at Chaters on multiple occasions and it is a venue we use for special occasions and to take visiting friends and family to ‘as a treat’. It was NY eve and it was busy but there were either too many covers or not enough staff and the food wasn’t good. It was, I’m told, a first for Chaters but it was a set menu. Had the bill been smaller I would have forgiven the experience but NY family is important and, at tad under £300, we’ll not be going back or recommending which is a shame as Chaters is a family favourite We’ll also be going in to the restaurant as we, in hindsight, think we may been charged incorrectly.

Another fantastic evening. Food amazing, all freshly prepared and cooked and full of flavours on so many levels. We had the beetroot with yoghurt, ham hock and cured salmon small plates. All three stunning and we wanted to lick the plates clean. Followed this with the cacio e pepe pasta which was equally stunning. Final course was an Almond flour chocolate cake with cherries which my partner devoured and said was delicious. I had the lasagne cheese crackers. I haven't had a dessert in years, but the crackers were 'homemade' so how could I resist? In a world full of ultra processed 'food' I know that what you get at Chaters is real ingredients elevated to another level.
Amazing service and we were again made to feel so welcome and the atmosphere was friendly and chilled.
We had a lovely evening and can't wait to visit again.

Fantastic food, as ever. This time the experience was great in spite of the service, which wasn’t great. The staff were sweet but mostly ignored us. Food was forgotten, couldn’t get anyone’s eye for a second drink, and then (after late food, and waiting for empty plates to be collected for a good ten mins) the waiter said, “you’ve got fifteen minutes left on the table, would you like a quick pudding?”. Pudding would have been too rushed, so we didn’t bother. It was a shame, particularly given that you weren’t short staffed (lots of time to chat to customers and have a little boogie in the kitchen).

Really lovely relaxed dinner. The service was warm and friendly, the atmosphere was informal, and the food was delicious. Some might find it a little casual and the decor a little stripped out, but we loved it. The small plate starters (especially the breads) were delicious, the pasta was really well cooked, and we shared a gorgeous silky boozy tiramisu. The wine choices were a bit unusual but no regrets there either! We'll definitely be back.
